I have them fill out a questionaire telling about themselves, what they would prefer to be called, why they're in the class, etc. And I tell them about myself, my story, my school history, and how I ended up in TN. It would be beneficial to have them read out their answers but I hate to make them talk on the 1st day. Perhaps it would be good to revisit them a few weeks in.

We have a unit in Career exploration in our FYE course. Students seems to engage in this activity- they dive deep into a career interest and do some research. This seems to get them thinking just how to achieved their career interest. this seems to be a great engagement for students.

I use a worksheet like Ashley described in my in-person class. It carries 5 points (out of 1,000, so it’s inconsequential on a student’s grade), so I use it for LDA.
