Session 4: Increasing Student Engagement in the Classroom - Shared screen with speaker view
Who can see your viewing activity?
Welcome everyone to Session 4 of the TBR HIP FYE Ambassador series!
Engagement with each person in the class, move around in the class, success teams groups.
Love the language of success teams, Nancy!
We use ST in our FYE course, students seem to enrage more in their ST groups, class.
I have them fill out a questionaire telling about themselves, what they would prefer to be called, why they're in the class, etc. And I tell them about myself, my story, my school history, and how I ended up in TN. It would be beneficial to have them read out their answers but I hate to make them talk on the 1st day. Perhaps it would be good to revisit them a few weeks in.
We have a unit in Career exploration in our FYE course. Students seems to engage in this activity- they dive deep into a career interest and do some research. This seems to get them thinking just how to achieved their career interest. this seems to be a great engagement for students.
Ashley, do you have the worksheet you would like to share or you do develop with each new class?
I use a worksheet like Ashley described in my in-person class. It carries 5 points (out of 1,000, so it’s inconsequential on a student’s grade), so I use it for LDA.
That's a great idea, Dr. Waters. Would you mind sharing your worksheet with us?
Here's my into form. I like the idea of revisiting them a couple weeks into class.
Thank you for sharing Ashley!
Ashley’s is much more fully developed. Mine is very basic.
Thank you Dr. Waters!
All of these sample worksheets are very helpful. Thank you!
In D2L - under groups, will assign the Success Teams groups.
I'm interested in that form you have Nancy
Great session! Thanks so much for the invitation and the great information!
Ideas to incorporate into your class: Interviews, having students define the soundtrack of their lives, where are they from? (interactive response map), using favorite quote (using Zoom whiteboard, Google Jamboard). Contact Misty Anderson at RSC CTAT. firstname.lastname@example.org
I will be happy to share the sample base group evaluations in week 3, week 7, & week 10. Feel free to edit to meet your needs! :)
